1874年に翻訳出版された化学入門書『ものわり の はしご』の語彙、特に巻頭の用語解説付録「ことば の さだめ」の見出し項目を分析した。本書は、漢字と漢語を廃し、化学的な現象や物質名を含め、全文を平仮名の和語で訳しており、その語彙分析から主な特徴として次の3点を見出した。（1）和語による造語は、それまでの漢字を用いた造語の流れを汲んでおり、和語でも体系的で簡明な命名が可能である。（2）類義関係にある和語動詞群を使い分けることにより、混同しやすい類似の化学現象を区別して表現できる。（3）漢語よりも和語の方が、現実世界の事象を巧みに言語に写像し命名した例も見られる。つまり本書は、近代の西洋思想を和語で表現し、論旨の通った文章を平仮名で表記できることを、化学の分野で世に示した先駆的実践ということができる。 |

This paper analyzes the vocabulary of the experimental chemistry book Monowari no Hashigo translated from English and published in 1874. It contains neither Kanji（Chinese characters）nor Kango (Chinese origin words). Rather, it was translated into Wago (native Japanese words) and written exclusively in Hiragana (the Japanese syllabic alphabet). The results of an analysis of the vocabulary, focusing especially on the lexical items of supplemental terminology appended to the book, showed three important findings: (1) The word formation of Wago resembles that of Kango, because the former inherits its structure from the latter. It is possible to coin words and build simple, clear, and systematic terminology in Wago. (2) The synonymous Wago verbs can be used to name and distinguish confusing chemical phenomena. (3) The Wago names often represent clearer and more distinct images of the chemical phenomena than the Kango names do. Monowari no Hashigo exemplifies how, in the field of chemistry, the native Japanese words written in the syllabic alphabet can successfully convey modern Western thought in a logical manner. |
