キリスト教は世界平和に貢献できるのだろうか。宗教そのものに問題はないかという問いが、アウシュヴィッツを経験したヨーロッパのキリスト教徒にとって深刻な問題であることをイスラエルに滞在中私は感じ取った。現在、世界平和の大きな焦点の一つである中東の政治状況をみると、10年前には、ユダヤ教とキリスト教の歩み寄りが積極的に行われていたかのように見えたことが、やはり表面上の動きにすぎなかったのかと思わざるを得ない。1993年9月にはノルウェーを仲介としてイスラエル・パレスチナ和平交渉が成立した。その年の12月末には歴史上はじめてイスラエルとバチカンとの間に国交が回復した。その頃、私は研究休暇でエルサレムのラティスボン・ユダヤ教研究所に滞在していた。翌1994年2月の初め、エルサレムで「現代社会と科学技術の挑戦に直面するユダヤ教徒とキリスト教徒の国際大会-世俗社会における宗教的リーダーシップ」(The International Jewish/ Christian Conference on Modern Social and Scientific Challenges-Religious Leadership in Secular Society)が開催された。この大会には世界96カ国から約500名が集まったが、私は傍聴人としての参加がゆるされ、そこでユダヤ教各派、キリスト教各派のリーダーの話に接することにより、諸宗教間対話の必要性を痛感した。 |

This is a preliminary study and reports on dialogue between Jews and Christians. It took place in February 1994, as "The International Jewish/Christian Conference on Modern Social and Scientific Challenges" in Jerusalem. The main theme was "Religious Leadership in Secular Society." It was a great event for both religions after historical establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and Vatican at the end of 1993. The major speakers were renowned and vigorous leaders from various denominations of Jews and Christians. Over 500 participants came together from the four corners of the world to listen, learn and discuss the major scientific and social challenges of our times that we face, and which demand moral address and guidance. As one of participants I learned a lot and want to share this experience with Japanese people who are interested in inter-religious dialogues. In this paper I introduce two distinct thoughts on "Jewish and Christians - Facing the modern world." The one is from Catholic side, Cardinal Ratzinger (President of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith) and the other from Jewish side, Rabbi Professor Irving Greenberg (President of the Center for Jewish Learning and Leadership, USA). In the middle, I introduce one of the opening remarks by Cardinal Carlo Martini (Archbishop of Milan and former president of the European Conference of Catholic Bishops) to think about the "modern world" and "religious leadership." To begin inter-religious dialogues, it is very important to listen to and learn from the other to tale right position in own attitudes and thoughts. (To be continued) |
